This year I have improved in so many different ways. One of the general skills I learned was how to develop a good composition. I implemented my new awareness of filling the space in my self-portrait, oil painting, and figure drawings. I also attempted to create points of interests that weren't in the middle and to keep the eye in motion throughout my art. With these tools and instruction on how to draw from a model, I definitely improved in figure drawing the most. My first attempts were small and in the center of the page. Their proportions were also off and the people just looked awkward, like they had no weight. With gesture drawings I learned how to make people appear 3D as well as fill the space. I also learned to enjoy figure drawing through this new technique.
However even with all I learned, I still need to improve when it comes to painting. My original sketch for the underpainting of my oil painting had a good composition, but when I started painting it shifted. This was because I struggle to control paint the way I can when drawing. Even with my self-portrait I struggled with ink washing. I need to practice blending and making crisp lines.
Next year I want to start making more 3D work like I did with my head and heart projects. I can still apply ideas about composition that I learned during the sculpture unit. The most important lesson I learned from that is if a sculpture is in the round, then it needs to be interesting from all angles. Another lesson I learned this year was not specifically taught, but something I began to notice: craftsmanship. I noticed that poor craftsmanship caused me to dislike a lot of my work. Next year I want to really take my time to make higher quality work.
